Our third and newest dining venue, the 1912 Bistro, is a relaxing spot where residents enjoy good food, a casual environment, and beautiful views of the mountains with outdoor seating options.

Wait-list Information

Yes, we do have a wait-list in Independent Living but not in Assisted Living. Because many people want to relax, enjoy, and live at Sunnyside, we have a waitlist that can be a 1 – 4+ year wait. If you like what you learn about Sunnyside, it is wise to apply for our waitlist. If eligibility guidelines are reached, you can become a member of our waitlist/Horizons Club (More info available on that).

Last Year's Milestone

Last year, Sunnyside celebrated our 110-year anniversary! We are home to 350 Independent Living active residents who enjoy 150 acres of spectacular landscapes that accommodate 128 cottages, 42 villas, and 100 apartments.

Since we began in 1912, Sunnyside has become an industry leader with an extraordinary reputation among Life Plan Communities. Our history and staff experience bring a deep-rooted knowledge of senior living, not to mention the ideas and inspirations of our residents who draw from diverse careers, home towns, interests, and adventures. Curiously, we have a large representation of educators who live here, which is fitting for our life-long learning focus. Our campus is loaded with beautiful mountain views, activities, and the higher levels of living when you need more support.

• Sunnyside won GOLD for BEST RETIREMENT COMMUNITY for the 2022 Shenandoah Valley’s Best! Harrisonburg Radio Group, comprised of 8 radio stations, named the winners who were chosen, voted on by Shenandoah Valley listeners. Over 2,500 businesses, organizations, and individuals competed for the top two spots (Gold and Silver) in each category.
• Winner of the ICAA Pinnacle Award for the third year in a row, placing in the TOP 2 in North America for exceptional wellness programming! Sunnyside is also a four-time winner of the ICAA Innovators Award, the only community nationally and internationally to ever accomplish this.
• Recipient of Virginia Living Magazine’s “Best of Virginia” for the 11th year in a row.

Facilities and Amenities

The Broaddus Vitality Center, a 13,000 sq ft wellness center, opened in March of 2021 with an indoor pool (the second pool on campus), indoor walking track, fitness studio, strength and cardio area, family locker rooms, Hoist, Hur and TRX equipment, Pickleball and more.

Six Nature Trails wind throughout campus and include the 50 acres acquired from Lakeview Golf Course in 2018.

Educational and Wellness Initiatives

Life-Long Learning has continued virtually and in-person through in-house broadcasts, lectures, and other educational opportunities and is enhanced because of our relationship with James Madison University, Sentara-Rockingham Memorial Hospital, and other local organizations.

Our newly renovated rehab area includes a therapy pool and equipment that provide exceptional post-surgery Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy services.

Quality and Excellence

We have benefitted from Zero deficiencies in Assisted Living and Memory Support for 5 years in a row, as well as the highest Quality Ratings in our Health Care Center and winner of the Health Quality Innovators Award for Resident-Centered Care.
