Could you provide an overview on the types of professionals on your staff and the training they undergo at your facility?

We have a variety of professionals here at Sunapee Cove. Our care team is constructed of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, licensed nursing assistants, and residential assistants. Aside from the professional training they received to obtain their licensures, there is also an abundance of mandatory training they must complete here as well. This training must be completed before they begin working and is repeated on a yearly basis. The training is consistent with NH state guidelines, which includes patients’ rights, infection control, emergency response, incident reporting, the reporting of elder abuse, a course on reducing safety risks for people with dementia, communication strategies in dementia care, managing challenging behaviors in dementia care, and activities for older adults with dementia.

Could you tell me about the measures you have in place to ensure the safety and well-being of your residents?

The safety and well-being of our residents is our key priority. Each resident has their own care plan. Some residents are completely independent and require no care at all, while others require varying levels of care. The care plan is designed to individually address the needs of each resident, and the measures that are implemented to support those needs. The care plan is reassessed every six months or as needed (i.e. a change in the resident's health). We have a safety committee that addresses any concerns that need to be addressed in the building. No one can enter our community after 7pm without entering a code, and we have security cameras throughout our community.

Do you offer any resources or support services to aid residents' transition into the community?

We know that this is a big step for people to take, so the team here always pays extra attention to our new residents during their transitioning period. The residents here are super supportive themselves. We have a resident here who has put together a list of helpful tidbits for new residents. She also has lunch with every new resident to offer advice and to answer any questions. We are one big family here, and everyone looks out for one another.

Do you offer transportation services for residents?

We have a van and a community SUV. Some of the activities offered here are offsite, so there is no fee pertaining to activities. We do offer transportation to appointments as well, but there is a fee of $16 round trip for local appointments, and $27 round trip to places further away, like Lebanon and Hanover.

Could you tell me a little about your dining experience?

We offer three meals per day. For breakfast, you can order basically anything you want. For lunch and supper, there are always two different entrees to choose from. One of the entrees is usually lighter than the other, so residents can choose when they would like to have their heavier meal. We also offer a list of alternatives if nothing being served appeals to you. There is no assigned seating, and dining is opened for an hour and a half for each meal, so you are welcome to dine anytime during those times. I can attest that the food is great here.

What is the process that takes place if a resident has a complaint or an issue they want addressed?

The executive director, Pudge, essentially has an open door policy. She is great about immediately addressing any concerns that are brought to her attention. We also have a comment box, where people can anonymously leave concerns. We have a resident council you can report to, and there is also a director's chat where residents regularly check in with the executive director.

What is your policy on communication with residents' families? How do you keep them updated about their loved ones' well-being?

We communicate with families regularly. If a resident still legally represents themselves, then we are limited to some information that we can share. However, our residents and their families become our family, so we often communicate with everyone. We always offer an open line of communication. We have a Facebook page, newsletter, and activity board, which also keeps families in the loop. Additionally, every resident has a list of contacts in their record, which identifies who we should reach out to.

Do you all offer short-term or respite stays? How much does this cost?

We do offer respite stays. There is a minimum of a 14-day stay for assisted living starting at $275 per day or $6,400 per month. There is a minimum stay of 30 days in our memory care and monthly rate would be the same as a full-time resident. The respite rates vary depending on the apartment you will be occupying while you are here. No one is required to physically remain here for the specified periods of time, but that is what you would be charged for.

Are you all a pet-friendly community?

We sure are. We welcome small animals. Many residents here have cats. There is a pet fee of $55 per pet, per month. Residents are responsible for taking care of the needs of their pets. However, there are times where we can step in and help. We just try not to make a habit of this.

Are residents able to get Covid vaccination and flu vaccinations in the community?

Yes. We have a flu clinic that comes here.

Are residents able to age in place?

Absolutely! We do everything we can to keep our residents here. There are many steps we can take to make sure we can still meet individual needs. For example, we have our memory care community, we can bring in VNA/Hospice services or bring in private caregivers.

We currently have some availability in both our assisted living and memory care, so we currently don't have a waitlist at the moment.
