Community Details
This detailed information was received through an email from the Area Sales and Marketing Director at Spring Arbor Cottage Of Richmond via email on 2024-05-23.
Memory Care Options for a Parent
Our community is split into three cottages on the property. Each “house” can have up to 16 residents, and each house is staffed with two Aides and one Med Tech. They are overseen by our Resident Care Director, Stacy, who is an LPN. All new hires, including direct care, management, activities, food service, and housekeeping, are required to go through a 6-hour long dementia training course as part of orientation. Our management team are also required to be trained as Certified Dementia Practitioners, to better understand the needs of our residents.
Security
Because we are a standalone memory care community, each “house” or Cottage on the property is secure. Team members are given a code, as well as a badge to allow themselves in and out of each building. If someone tries to push the front or back door without entering the code or using the badge, an alarm will go off. Families and other visitors can ring the doorbell at the Cottage they are visiting, and a team member will let them in. When visitors are leaving, team members will let them out.
Transitioning In
Each transition is so unique! We suggest families bring their loved one to the community close to a mealtime on move in day, which helps our resident jump in on the Activities calendar of the day. We ask families for information before moving a loved one in, so that we can redirect residents effectively.
In-House and External Services
While we do bring services in-house (such as primary care, hair nails, PT/OT/speech therapy, and even a geriatric psychiatrist!), if families opt to have their loved one go to an appointment outside of the community, we can provide transportation to and from appointments, as long as it is in the Richmond area. We ask that families meet their loved one at the appointment. We also do two resident outings a month, which could be a scenic drive, going out for lunch, or going to pick up donuts!
Food Service
I’m excited to say we have a need Food Service Director, Kyrel! He is phenomenal. With Dementia, we have learned that having too many options at mealtime can be incredibly overwhelming. We have incorporated a fixed menu for our residents, but we are also stocked with supplies for a standard fare menu, as well. We serve three meals a day, as well as snacks! Every two hours, we are providing residents with water, as UTIs are quite common for people with Dementia. As residents progress through the disease process, they sometimes lose their fine motor skills, and subsequently begin to eat with their hands. If it gets to that point, we will begin serving food that is dignifying to eat with one’s hands, always keeping our resident’s dignity in mind.
Advocacy
As we are a memory care community, with all of our residents having some form of Dementia, our residents are oftentimes unable to voice their concerns. Not only do the families of our residents serve as their advocates, but so does our team!
Rates and Levels of Care
I have attached a copy of our rates sheet for your review. There is the cost of the room, and then level of care as an additional cost. We go on a scale of 1-6, which is determined during the pre-move in assessment, and reflects how fully dependent a resident will be on our team.
Communication
Communication takes place over the phone, over email, and in person! Mainly depends on the preference of the family. While of course providing updates in real time about any changes, we’re also notifying families of their loved ones’ engagement in activities!
Respite Stays
We do offer respite stays! We suggest a two-week minimum. I have attached our all-inclusive rates for your review, as well!
Pets
Because we are memory care and our residents are oftentimes unable to care for pets on their own, we do not allow pets to move in permanently. However, we love to have furry friends come to visit!
Availability
We currently do not have a waitlist. Our community does have availability!
Vaccine Clinic
In the fall, we offer a vaccine clinic, where residents can receive Covid and Flu vaccines. Families can decide whether or not they would like to utilize this service.
Aging in Place
Our goal is for residents to age in place. We are more than happy to refer families to hospice groups that we know and trust, should the research process become too daunting.
